I have been visiting relatives in Charleston, SC at LEAST once a year since I was a young child – yet this is the first time I remember visiting the Angel Oak Tree. It is something you can not appreciate fully until you are standing next to it. The tree is estimated to be over 500 years old (with some estimates placing its age closer to 1,400 years.) It stands 65.5 feet tall, measures 28 feet in circumference, and covers an area of 17,200 square feet. The longest branch measures 187 feet. Many of the branches are so long (and heavy) that they actually grow into, then back out of the ground. The sight of this magnificent tree truly takes one’s breath away. If ever in Charleston, I recommend a visit to the Angel Oak site. All for now…
